N1 Rocket 9

The super-heavy N1 rocket was built to send cosmonauts to the Moon, Mars, and Venus, and to launch massive space stations. A true engineering giant, it had five stages — the first powered by a massive cluster of 30 kerosene-fueled engines using liquid oxygen.

N1 Rocket Collection
The N1 Rocket was the Soviet Union’s super-heavy launcher, designed for missions to the Moon, Mars, and Venus, as well as to place large space stations into orbit. It was a massive five-stage rocket and a bold engineering effort.
Watch
At 105 meters tall and 17 meters wide, the N1 used 30 engines in its first stage, fueled by kerosene and liquid oxygen. It was the USSR’s answer to NASA’s Saturn V during the space race.
Watch
Developed from 1962 to 1974, the N1 had four launch attempts between 1969 and 1972 — all unsuccessful. The program was canceled in 1974 without reaching its goals.
