The most powerful space launcher in history, the universal “Energia” rocket system, took its first flight in 1987 after a decade of development. It was capable of carrying massive payloads of up to 100 tons.

The Energia Space Program, also called the Energia-Buran program, was a Soviet project to build reusable spacecraft and launch rockets.
The goal was to compete with the United States’ Space Shuttle program.
Its main part was the Energia rocket, the most powerful launch vehicle ever made. After ten years of work it flew for the first time in 1987 and could carry up to 100 tons into space.
