The program was developed under immense pressure and in near total secrecy. Four launch attempts were made between 1969 and 1972. All four ended in failure. The last attempt, in July 1969, produced one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history when the rocket collapsed back onto its own launchpad seconds after liftoff.

After that the program was quietly cancelled. The hardware was destroyed. The documents were sealed. For almost twenty years, the N1 rocket did not officially exist. However, the full story would emerge again.
